New Year’s Eve, like most other major holidays throughout 2020, will probably look a lot different due to the Corona virus pandemic. Our caring experts at Regency Home Care, providing in-home senior Atlanta Elderly Care, have some clever tips for your New Year evening celebration.
When COVID-19 hit nursing homes, experts quickly realized that the elderly were among the most vulnerable. While family members were not allowed to visit residential facilities, they also started taking steps to protect even those aging loved ones who lived at home independently. As a result, birthday parties, Passover, Easter services, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Halloween, and Thanksgiving have all looked different this year. Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s Eve are the next that will most likely need to be adjusted. But, that doesn’t mean you have to take the fun out of everything.
The safest way to celebrate is going to be through use of technology. The only hindrance to this will be helping your aging loved one understand how to use the device of choice. If you cannot be there with them, an in-home care giver may be able to help get them set up.
Make sure your loved one is set up with a way to communicate online, and celebrate New Year’s Eve with a video call. Platforms like Zoom, Google Hangouts, Face Time, or a Facebook Live event all allow people from miles away to join together in one room safely. You can even play party games together online. The good news is that you can blow your noisemaker or scream and bang pots and pans as loud as you like. If it gets too loud, all you have to do is turn down the volume on your computer, phone, or tablet.
Another idea is to write down New Year’s resolutions, and share them through email or text. Or, host an online watch party to view New Year’s Eve related movies safely and socially distanced in your own home, but at the same time. Some ideas include the 1965 movie, Chimes at Midnight, a 1938 movie, Holiday, ‘Til We Meet Again, from 1940, or Holiday Inn, a 1942 film.
Continue the celebration into the first day of the New Year with hopes the pandemic will be over soon. Arrange to have a New Year’s Day brunch delivered on January 1. Just make sure the food is safely prepared, and the delivery person is not putting your loved one at risk.
